How did we get to where we are today? It starts with the story of a dilapidated trailer named Betty. Straight out of undergraduate engineering school, we set out to rock climb our way around the western US with Betty in tow. While doing this, we met climbers of all ages and walks of life who made their outdoor time a priority. Some of them worked as temp workers or manual laborers to maintain their lifestyle, while others were professionals actively seeking the right work situation to sustain their love of climbing. This ignited a passion in us for the simple pleasures of outdoors, travel, and physical exertion in a fun, social environment.
But we were both still high achievers. We love to learn, and thus we continued on our academic trajectory towards professional careers. Trent became a lawyer, and Dawn became a doctor. However, due to our experiences climbing and traveling, neither one of us has ever held a “normal” rat-race kind of job in our fields. Our eyes were always open to the possibility of simple living and balancing personal time with work time.
Some things have changed over our 20+ years together: periods of too much work, periods of complete leisure, periods of illness, periods of optimal strength and health, and the addition of Aspen (our daughter) to the family. Yet during these times, we’ve remained true to our “dirtbag” nature while achieving financial independence and then some! Come along on our stealth wealth journeys and learn how we do it.
